Your right to information: New partnership to develop Vanuatu Media Development and Freedom of Information Policy

Government, civil society organisations and the media are working together to develop a media development policy, including freedom of information legislation, for Vanuatu. Freedom of information (FOI) is the principle that every person has a right to access information held by organisations and governments, based on the public’s right to be informed.

On 2 December last year, the national Parliament debated a motion of no confidence and elected a new Prime Minister without allowing public or media access to witness this important event.

At the time, the Media Asosiesen blong Vanuatu (MAV) expressed its great concern at this exclusion of the public and media from witnessing the change of Government, and called for 2 December each year to be set aside for the people of Vanuatu to reflect on the importance of open government in a democracy, and also on the important role the media can play in Vanuatu’s development and progress.

Last month, MAV, along with media organisations, government and nongovernment organisations came together to celebrate World Press Freedom Day and to launch the Vanuatu Media Freedom Essay Competition.

Today, MAV President, Evelyne Toa, has announced that 2 December each year will be Media Freedom Day for media practitioners in Vanuatu. “We in the media need to remind ourselves and others of the important role of the media in society. We also need to celebrate our achievements and successes, and so on Media Freedom Day on 2 December, we will hold Vanuatu’s first media awards. These awards will recognise achievements and excellence across all media and across all aspects of media production.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate two veterans of the media, Mr Moses Stevens and Mr Jonas Cullwick, on this week’s launch of the first newspaper to be owned and operated by media practitioners in Vanuatu. This is an exciting development in our media industry here and is a significant milestone.”

Freedom of expression remains as important as ever in the digital age, serving as a basis for democracy and human dignity everywhere, senior United Nations officials stressed today as the Organization observed World Press Freedom Day with a series of events around the globe.
